Once, there were four Hoppelon, always united. Yet even apples grown from the same tree cannot agree forever. To resolve disputes, they adopted an anonymous voting system—every decision, big or small, was put to a vote. It proved cumbersome. When the time came to shed their green spring coats and don their red summer ones, the vote deadlocked, two against two. From dawn until dusk, their positions shifted and compromised, but never reached a three-apple majority. In the end, they decided to act as three. Keeping an odd number, they realized, was one of the keys to unity.
